Became Spain's principal seaport for imperial commerce in 17th century, after problems with Seville's maritime facilities and sillting of Guadaquivir River brought about the shift. Located about 50 miles northwest of Gibraltar, directly on the Atlantic Ocean. Established as an Atlantic base by Phoenicians in the 8th century BC, when it was called Gadir. From there they sailed north to Tagus River and south to Mogador.
