City (1990 pop. 78,836), sub-prefecture of Pas-de-Calais dept., N France, in old Picardy prov., on the Strait of Dover (Fr. Pas de Calais ), 145 mi/233 km NNW of Paris and 27 mi/43 km ESE of Dover, England; 50º57'N 01º51'E. Leading commercial seaport (general merchandise) and principal Fr. passenger terminal for ferry, hovercraft, and cross-channel tunnel traffic to the U.K. Calais is linked by canal with the Aa R. and N France’s waterways. Just S of harbor entrance is the circular, formerly fortified old town, completely surrounded by boat basins, canals, and docks.
