Promontory, Dare co., E N.C., on Hatteras Isl., in Outer Banks, sand barrier bet. the Atlantic Ocean (E and S) and Pamlico Sound (NW), in Cape Hatteras Natl. Seashore. Called the “Graveyard of the Atlantic,” the cape experiences frequent storms that drive ships landward toward its dangerous shallow and changing depths. Cape Hatteras Lighthouse (built 1870) was removed in 1936 due to heavy beach erosion, but is again exposed to the ocean.
