Plan initaited by George Washington and his Potomac Company in 1785 to link Potomac to Ohio River by canals. Little progress made in his lifetime; Company lost its charter in 1824; 130-mile portion opened in 1839; final link to Cumberland, Md. opened in 1850; never economically viable.
