Swimming beach, amusement center, and neighborhood of S Brooklyn borough of N.Y. city, SE N.Y., on the Atlantic Ocean; 40º35'N 74º00'W. A seaside resort from the mid-19th cent., RR service made it an extremely popular resort. Although it remains popular, Coney Isl. has declined considerably since its heyday in the 1920s and 1930s.
