Former capital of the Byzantine Empire and of the Ottoman Empire, since 1930 officially called Istanbul. It was founded (A.D. 330) at anc. Byzantium as the new capital of the Roman Empire by Constantine I, after whom it was named. After World War I the city was occupied (1918-1923) by the Allies. In 1922 the last Ottoman sultan was deposed and Ankara became (1923) the new (cap.) of Turkey.
