City (1991 pop. 915,516), Leinster prov., (cap.) the Republic of Ireland, on Dublin Bay at the mouth of the Liffey R; 53º20'N 06º15'W. Its harbor, with shipyards, docks, and quays, dates from 1714. Dublin was a Danish town until 1014, when Brian Boru defeated the Danes at nearby Clontarf. The Danes established themselves again until the Eng. captured the city in 1170.
