Island, (area; 27.5 acres), SE N.Y., in Upper N.Y. Bay, c.1 mile SW of the Battery of Manhattan; 40º42'N 74º02'W. Ferry connections. Govt. property since 1808, it was 1st site of an arsenal and fort, later (1892-1943) the chief immigration station of U.S.; located just N of the Statue of Liberty. Between 1892 and 1954, 12 million immigrants were processed here.
