The powerful and prosperous cities of Nineveh, Calah and Ashur flourished along its shores. Provided water for the civilizations of Sumer and Babylonia. River not navigable except by shallow draft boats. In recent centuries joins the Tigris above the city of Basra, which then flowed into marshlands and into the Persian Gulf.
