narrow barrier island, 32 miles long, off S shore of L.I., SE N.Y., separating Great South Bay from the Atlantic Ocean; 40º45'N 72º50'W. Once accessible only by boat or ferry, Fire Isl. enjoyed a rare privacy until the construction of a bridge in 1959 linked the E end of the isl. with L.I. Another bridge was later built. Fire Isl. Natl. Seashore (est. 1964) covers 30 sq miles of the isl. and includes wooded areas, marshes, and Sunken Forest, an area of unusual plant and animal life.
