120 miles long. The southwestern most of the submerged banks running parallel to the coast of New England between Nantucket Island and Newfoundland, bet. 40º00'N and 42º00'N. Georges Bank is S of the Bay of Fundy off the coast of Mass., with depths not exceeding 328 ft. Its surface for the most part is levelled and dissected in places by sand ridges formed by tidal currents. It is one of the oldest and once one of the richest fisheries in the world, now severely depleted. Currently being explored for its oil and gas reserves.
