Connects New Jersey and upper Manhattan (179th St.) across the Hudson River. Main span is 3700', with two towers 600' tall. Built by Othman Ammann at cost of $59 million; opened in 1931; second deck added in 1962. Little Red Schoolhouse located at base of NYC-side tower. Nine miles north of the Battery. Water below it flows with semidiurnal tidal current. Under the bridge, ebbing current (southward) upwards of 2.5 knots, flooding (northward) about 2 knots. Tidal swing averages about 5'.
