Africa, Atlantic Gulf Gulf of Guinea

Large open arm of the Atlantic Ocean formed by the great bend of the coast of W Africa. It extends from the W coast of Cote d'Ivoire to the Gabon estuary and is bounded on the S by the equator. The bights of Benin and Nigeria belong to the gulf. Offshore oil and metal ore deposits have been found. Islands in the gulf include Fernando Po, Sao Tome, and Principe.
