Hudson River to NW; East River to SE. Navigable tidal channel, 8 miles long with Spuyten Duyvil Creek, in N.Y. city, SE N.Y., separating Manhattan from the Bronx. Connecting the Hudson and East rivers, it is a shipping shortcut bet. L.I. Sound and river ports N of N.Y. city. Several RR and many street bridges span the river.
