City (1990 pop. 1,630,553; 2000 pop. 1,953,631), (cap.) Harris co.,SE Texas, corporate limits extend SW into Fort Bend co. and N into Montgomery co.; 29º46'N 95º23'W. A deepwater port on the Houston Ship Channel, it is the 4th-largest city in the nation, largest city in Texas and the largest city in the entire South and Southwest, U.S. port of entry; a great industrial, commercial, and financial hub; one of the world’s major oil centers; and the 3rd busiest tonnage-handling port in the U.S. (after New York and S La.). The digging (1912-1914) of the Houston Ship Channel made it a deepwater port and led to its expansion.
