273 miles long, NE Ill.; formed by the confluence of the Des Plaines and Kankakee rivers; flows SW to the Mississippi R. at Grafton; 41º23'N 88º15'W. Important commercial and recreational waterway. Forms the greater part of the Illinois Waterway, which links the Great Lakes with the Mississippi. The chief city on the river is Peoria. Water quality has improved after decline in early 20th cent.
