340 miles long, formed in W central Va. by Jackson and Cowpasture rivers; 37º47'N 79º46'W. Flows generally E past Glasgow, where it receives Maury (North) R. from N, cuts through Blue Ridge at Balcony Falls, past Lynchburg, Goochland, Richmond, over falls and around islands past Hopewell, where it becomes a tidal river, continues ESE through series of historic plantations, widens into estuary c.12 miles W of Williamsburg and receives Chickahominy R. from NW. Continues past Jamestown and Newport News, forms Hampton Roads, harbor for Newport News, Hampton, Portsmouth, and Norfolk, before entering Chesapeake Bay, c.20 miles W of mouth of the bay.
