City (area; 6 sq miles; 1990 pop. 24,832; 2000 pop. 25,478), Monroe co., on an isl. at the SW extremity of the Fla. Keys, c.150 miles SW of Miami (but only 90 miles from Cuba). The southernmost city of the continental U.S., it is a port of entry (cruise ships), a popular resort with a tropical climate, a shrimping and fishing center, and an artists’ colony.
