large inlet of Philippine Sea bet. Leyte and Samar, Philippines. Homonhon Isl. guards the entrance, and Surigao Strait opens S to Mindanao Sea; a narrow channel in N, bet. Leyte and Samar, leads to Samar Sea and the inland waters. In World War II, here was fought the Battle of Leyte Gulf (also called 2d battle of the Philippine Sea) on Oct. 23-26, 1944. The battle, bet. almost all of the Jap. fleet and the U.S. Third and Seventh Fleets, resulted in a great U.S. victory, which definitively destroyed Japan's sea power.
