Australia Seaport, City Melbourne

City (1991 pop. 2,761,995), (cap.) Victoria, SE Australia, on Port Phillip Bay, at the mouth of the Yarra R.; 37º50'S 145º00'E. The city is heavily industrialized; industries include shipbuilding. Settled in 1835, it was named (1837) for Lord Melbourne, the Br. prime minister. From 1901 to 1927 the city was the seat of the Australian federal govt.
