City (area; 54 sq miles; 1990 pop. 358,548; 2000 pop. 362,470), (cap.) Dade co., SE Fla., on Biscayne Bay, at the mouth of the Miami R.; 25º46'N 80º12'W. The 2d-largest city in the state, a port of entry, and the transportation and business hub of SE Fla. The city is also the processing and shipping hub of a large agr. region. The 1st settlement was made here in the 1870s near the site of Fort Dallas, built in 1836 during the Seminole War. In 1895, Henry M. Flagler took charge of the area.
