27 miles long. 3 feet deep. Privately financed undertaking begun in 1793; opened in 1803; linked Boston to Merrimack River (future site of Lowell) and allowed water transport from Boston to Concord, New Hampshire. 20 locks; 8 aqueducts; 48 bridges; barges pulled by horse/oxen. Closed in 1853.
