The principal river of coastal New Hampshire, providing an ample harbor at Portsmouth, just three miles from the open ocean. Kittery, Maine on northerern side of river from Portsmouth. Tidal swing at mouth of 7' and maximum spring ebb. current of 6 knots. Major site for shipbuilding in 18th century. River and its tributaries reached Exeter, Durham and South Berwick, 25 miles from the sea, enabling all these towns to serve as minor ports and shipbuilding centers.
