212 miles long, N and E Va.; rises in Blue Ridge Mts., N Va., in NW part of Fauquier/Rappahannock co. line; flows generally SE, passes SW of Warrenton, then passes Fredericksburg and Port Royal, where it becomes a tidal stream; continues SE past Tappahannock, widening into estuary and entering Chesapeake Bay, 38 miles N of Hampton, bet. Windmill Point (N) and Stingray Point. (S). Navigable to Fredericksburg. Receives Rapidan R. from W 8 miles NW of Fredericksburg. Area of much Civil War fighting.
