Site of shortlived Popham colony in 1607, at the mouth of Kennebec River, the southern coast of Maine. Expedition leaders were George Popham and Raleigh Gilbert. Settlement financed by Fernando Gorges and the Plymouth Company. Site of first European-built ship in North America, the shallop Virginia .
