Between the 2 peninsulas of E L.I. in SE N.Y.; 7 miles long and 6 miles wide; 41º04'N 72º19'W. Settled in the 17th cent. by Eng. colonists, the isl. has been a summer resort since the 1870s. Its irregular coastline provides harbors for small boats.
