Town (1990 pop. 16,919), New London co., extreme SE Conn., on a peninsula jutting into L.I. Sound; 41º22'N 71º54'W. Fishing and mfg. of precision tools, boats, and textiles are leading industries. The Old Lighthouse Museum in S. Stonington; attracts many tourists to its narrow streets and quaint shops; the borough also is home port for Connecticut’s only commercial fishing fleet. Stonington town also includes part of the village of Mystic. The town was attacked by Br. naval forces in the Amer. Revolution and in the War of 1812. Settled 1649 from Plymouth, inc. 1662.
