North America, Mid-West Canal Welland Canal

30 miles long. Canal constructed 1824-1829 and modified several time since, links Lakes Ontario and Lake Erie and permits ship traffic across the Great Lakes; its locks raise water level about 300 feet, to bring the lower levels of Lake Ontario up to those of the higher Lake Erie. This differential reflected in the drop of water from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario at Niagara Falls.
