Active in the United Company of Spermacetti Chandlers, along with other Newport merchants and the Browns of Providence. In 1770 he owned some 20 vessels, which he sent to West Indies and to West Africa trafficking in slaves. Unenthusiatic about indepependence, he spent the war in Massachusetts, and was returning to Newport in 1782 when he died in a roadside accident.
