Well-traveled Dutch trader who followed up Henry Hudson's 1609 reconnaissance of North America with a fuller exploration of New York Harbor and Long Island Sound during at least thee visits in 1612-14. Provided the first mapping of southern New England coast, including Long Island Sound and Block Island off coast of Rhode Island. While in New York, loss of one of his ships led to the building of a yacht, the Onrust, one of the first ships built by Europeans in North America.
