Dutch official in New Netherland in 1630s and 1640s; graduate of University of Leiden; sheriff of Willem Van Rensselear's patroonship above Albany; later, critic of Peter Stuyvesant and West Indies Company and advocate of greater freedom for residents of New Amsterdam; owned estate encompassing present day Yonkers; author of "Remonstrance" of the People of New Netherland (1650), of a 1650 map of region and sketch of New Amsterdam (later the Vissher-Jansson map). While back in Amsterdam in 1653, published Description of New Netherland as It Was in 1640 .
