Captain of the Mayflower in 1620 on its passage from Southampton, England to New England. An able seaman who had access to a 3' crossstaff for calculating latitude. Nonetheless, put the Mayflower two degrees to the north of where the patent allowed the Pilgrims to settle. Was unable to get around Cape Cod when sighting land off Truro and wintered with the Pilgrims in Plymouth.
