One of the five fatalities of the "Boston Massacre," March 6, 1770, when British troops fired on a threatening Boston mob. Thought to have been a sailor, possibly a whaleman, of mixed Indian-African parentage. John Adams, defending te British troops, depicted the burly Attucks as the instigator of the violence and leader of other sailors.
