Son of a prominent Marblehead maritime and fish merchant. Owned ships, along with his brother, in Marblehead in 1770s, when he became involved in provincial and national politics. Marblehead's most conspicuous revolutionary leader.
Signer of Declaration of Independence, member of several Continental Congresses and non-signer at the federal Convention in 1787. Later a prominent Jeffersonian.
