Born in Gloucester, where his father was a sail maker. Lower legs paralyzed as a young child; rest of life on crutches. He apprenticed in Boston as a lithographer and printer. Began working in oils in late 1830s. Became the first American-borne marine painter of real stature. Major seascapes included View of Gloucester from Rocky Neck (1846), View of Boston Harbor(1852), Owl's Head, Penobscot Bay, Maine (1862), Ships on Ice off Ten Pound Island, Gloucester (1850's). Later works distinguished by their luminist qualities. Over 190 of his paintings and 58 lithographs still extant.
