First Lord Baltimore and colonial entrepreneur Convert to Catholicism and organizer of settlement in Maryland. Had visited Newfoundland (Avalon) and Virginia in 1628-29 in search of a suitable location for a Catholic settlement. Granted proprietorship north and east of Virginia (at the Potomac) in 1632 by Charles I. His elder son Cecilius took over the lordship and the enterprise upon his death in 1632.
