Czech-born bridge builder. Completed the Williamsburg Bridge (1903) and designed the Queensborough/59th St.(1909) Bridge in New York City. The City's Commissioner of the Department of Bridges, 1902-04. Also designed the Hell Gate Bridge (1917). Mentor of Othmar Amman.
