Made two exploratory expeditions, in 1534 and 1535-36, when he traced the St. Lawrence River southwestward to the present site of Montreal. In 1541, he made his third and last voyage to Canada, the outbound passage taking three months at sea. All voyages began at the French port of St. Malo.
