Connecticut-born explorer who accompanied James Cook on his third voyage to the Pacific in 1776. Later walked across Siberia. Alerted fellow Americans to the riches of the Pacific Northwest, including Thomas Jefferson, whom Ledyard met and corresponded with when Jefferson in Paris. Ledyard's own commercial projects failed. Died in Cairo. A Journal of Captain Cook's Last Voyage (1783)
