King of Portugal from 1481, upon the death of his father Alfonso V, to his death in 1495. Supported Portugal's overseas venture in the spirit of his grand uncle, Prince Henry. Not reponsive to several requests from Christopher Columbus that he support a transatlantic undertaking, especially after 1488 and Bartolomeu Dias's successful passage into the Indian Ocean around the southern tip of Africa.
