Second son of the first Lord Baltimore (George Calvert) and younger brother of Cecilius, the Second Lord Baltimore; an accomplished mariner who sailed to Newfoundland and Virginia in 1628-29 before leading the seaborne expedition to the top of Chesapeake Bay in the fall of 1633. Involved two vessels, the 360-ton ship .Ark and the 60-ton Dove. Put 200 settlers ashore at St. Mary's on March 25, 1634.
