German-born cartographer employed in Portugal; credited with constructing the first world globe, "Nurnberg Terrestrial," in 1490-92. Depicts western Atlantic as strewn with islands and no continent; has Japan well east of the Asian continent. Like D'Ailly, seriously understimated the earth's circumference. His calculations known to and accepted by Columbus, who may have had a map rendering of Behaim's globe with him on his first voyage in 1492.
