Born in Yorkshire and early on a sailor; of doubtful literacy. Likely a pirate in 1560s. One of Elizabeth I's "sea dogs," and tenacious seeker after a Northwest passage. First attempt in 1576 aboard the Gabriel (30 tons) and accompanied by the Michael (25 tons) and a pinnace (10 tons). Combined crew of 39. Reached 62N (Frobisher Bay) and blocked.

Tried again in 1577 aboard the Aid (200 tons), and a third attempt in 1578, with 15 ships.
