An American painter born in Pennsylvania; studied painting as a young man with Edward Hicks; later studied in Europe; most famous paintings those of New England coastline, especially Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island, and tropical flowers. Maintained a studio in NYC in 1860s and 1870s. Later linked to the Luminist school that included Fitz Hugh Lane and John F. Kensett.
