4th generation of Providence Browns; younger son of the first Brown to enter commerce, James (1666-17xx) and brother of James (1700-1739), with whom he expanded their father's commercial interests into several seagoing enterprises. Like James, he started out at sea as a super-cargo trading in the West Indies. Started the family's interest in the manufacture/export of spermacetti candles in 1751. In 1750s also moved into marine indurance. Attempted to initate direct trade between Rhode Island (by passing Boston) and London; was briefly engaged in the West African slave trade in 1736.
