First mate on the Natucket whaler, Essex, which hunting whales in South Pacific in January 1820, was in a whale boat when a harpooned whale rammed and sunk the mother ship. Owen, Captain George Pollard and a third crew member survived in a whaleboat, but not before likely eating parts of a fourth man aboard. The next year Chase wrote his Narrative of the Most Extraordinary and Distressing Shipwreck of the Whale-Ship Essex, of Nantucket
