Portuguese mariner who happened upon west coast of South America, at latitude of Brazil, in 1500, while attempting drifting westward in attempt to sail around the Cape of Good Hope. Basis for Portuguese calim to this western most part of the Americas, as per the 1494 Treaty of Tordesillas.
