English navigator, privateer, shipbuilder and map maker/artist; the first to publish a nautical atlas of the world, Dell'Arcano del Mare , as an exile in Florence, Italy. First nautical maps/charts to adopt the Mercator projection whereby ship's transoceanic courses could be drawn as straight lines.
