Geophysicist trained at the University of Illinois and long affiliated with the Scripps Oceanographic Institute. While there in the 1950s he observed sea mounts on the bottom of the Pacific Ocean; in 1961 he proposed the theory of seafloor spreading, which, aslong with the explanations of Harry Hess, directly to the formulation of the theory of plate tectonics to account for the movement of the earth's continents.
