Bostonian and Harvard graduate (1740), Adams became an effective mobilizer of public agitation in Boston; was especially effective in dealing with the town's maritime workers. Came of political age during the Knowles riots of 1747; prominet in the anti-Stamp Act disturbances and the Boston Tea Party; one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.
